POW backs bandh

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD May 20. The State Executive of the Progressive Organisation for Women (POW) gave a call for the success of Statewide bandh on Wednesday demanding implementation of drought relief measures.

The POW president, V. Sandhya, and the general secretary, G. Jhansi,

told mediapersons here on Tuesday that the bandh in the State was being organised as part of the call given by the Left political parties for a nation-wide bandh to denounce the anti-labour and anti-people policies of the Government at the instance of the World Bank and other international trade organisations.

A two-day POW State executive meeting held on Sunday and Monday called upon people to counter officials in the Rytu-Mahila Janmabhoomi commencing from June 1 about drought relief measures, sanction of ration cards and widow and old-age pensions. Fool- proof implementation of Food for work programme, extending the mid-day meal scheme to pregnant women, aged and physically handicapped, distribution of drinking water and fodder on a war-footing in drought-affected areas, security, free transport and medical facilities to migrating workers, were other demands.

The POW also demanded abolition of GO No. 379 that would empower the officials from evicting the poor cultivating the endowment lands since decades. Some landlords who had taken endowment lands on lease for a nominal basis had given the same lands for sub-lease to the poor. The Government should identify the real tenants, purchase the endowment lands through SC, ST and BC Corporations and distribute the same free of cost to the poor SC, ST, BCs.

In the name of sanction of ration cards, the Government was taking away the existing cards, they alleged and said the annual income to be eligible for white ration cards be enhanced from Rs. 11,000 to at least Rs. 20,000. The Rs. 11,000 annual income was fixed 15 years ago, they pointed out.
