Strike may hit normal life

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM May 20. Normal life in the State was likely to be hit by the 24-hour countrywide general strike called by Opposition trade unions and service organisations beginning midnight tonight.

The strike call has been given by the CITU, AITUC, HMS, UTUC and other major Central trade unions. Unions of bank employees, State Government employees, university staff and those employed in various other service sector entities such as KSEB have decided to join the strike which has been called to protest against the economic policies being pursued by the Central and State Governments.

While major unions and service organisations, including the NGO Union, Joint Council and Kerala Gazetted Officers' Association, have come out with calls to the employees to join the strike, those owing allegiance to the ruling UDF constituents such as the NGO Association, have declared that they would not endorse the strike call.

The pro-BJP employees' organisations have also come out against the strike call.

The Government has made it clear that it would invoke dies non provisions in the case of employees who strike work.
