DVAC searches in Ko. Si. Mani's houses

CHENNAI MAY 20. Officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption today conducted searches on 11 premises in connection with a case of "disproportionate wealth" against the former Local Administration Minister, Ko. Si. Mani.

On Monday, the Directorate registered a case against "Mr. Mani and his second wife under Section 13 (1) (e) read with 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 109 IPC", a DVAC release said. Following this, the searches were conducted today — at three places in Thanjavur district, four in Nagapattinam district, three in Chennai and one place in Tiruchi.

A house, occupied by the Kumbakonam MLA's son-in-law at Palayamkottai, was sealed and would be searched tomorrow on his arrival from Chennai.

Four bank lockers were operated by the DMK leader's family members. Of these, two lockers at Kumbakonam and Tiruchi were searched. The remaining would be searched tomorrow. Investigation revealed that Mr. Mani acquired assets worth about Rs. 1 crore in his name and in the names of his family members. Incriminating documents were seized, the release said.

Simulataneous raids

In Thanjavur district, the vigilance and anti-corruption police conducted simultaneous raids on the residences of Mr. Mani at Aduthurai near Kumbakonam, of his son, Ko. Si. Mathiyalagan, at Kuttalam, at Mekkirimangalam and of two relatives at Kumbakonam.

When sleuths led by Balasubramanyam, DSP, Vigilance and Anti-corruption, Thanjavur district, descended on the Aduthurai residence at 8 a.m. Mr. Mani was not in the house. The police were told that the former Minister had been admitted to a private hospital in Chennai for a cataract operation. The police, who showed search warrants, continued the operation till 5 p.m.

As per a list given by the police to Raja, PA to Mr. Mani, they seized Rs. 3,800 in cash, 10 gm of gold jewellery and 1.5 kg of silver articles. The police reportedly assessed the value of wooden and other furniture also.

At Kuttalam, the police informed Mr. Mathiyalagan of the raids and conducted a search in his presence. At Mekkirimangalam, the police informed neighbours, who had the key of the locked house, and conducted the search. Raids were conducted on two premises of the relatives of the Minister at Kumbakonam. All these searches were completed by noon.

In Tiruchi, a team conducted a raid on the premises of Manimegalai, daughter of Mr. Mani, at Thillainagar.

Details of seizure, if any, were not available, as the team, after completing the operation, left for Thanjavur.

TV reporter attacked

A representative of a Tamil satellite channel was allegedly attacked by some persons as he was recording a DVAC raid on the house of Mr. Mathiyalagan, at Pudu Nagar, Kuttalam.

The police recovered a cassette, which had been snatched from the reporter. Four persons have been taken into custody.
