All these years, the MCD officials kept their eyes closed as Khattar -- presently in judicial custody and undergoing medical treatment at Escort's Heart Hospital -- wielded so much influence and power that no official even thought of looking at his illegal properties. However, after Khattar's arrest the tide has turned against him. Grabbing the opportunity, the civic body has now initiated the process of demolishing all his unauthorised and illegal properties constructed in blatant violation of building by-laws and without any approval from the authorities concerned. The process started soon after his arrest by the CBI at the direction of the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta. After completing the legal procedure of issuing show-cause notices to Khattar, the MCD has started demolition of one of his hotels -- plot No. 2958 -- at Chuna Mandi in the congested area of Paharganj. Constructed over 55 square yards, the four-storey hotel has 12 rooms and a servant quarter and a toilet on the terrace. The demolition exercise which began last week is being done manually so far as the area is congested. Senior officials said the exercise would be completed on Wednesday when bulldozers and a large work force would be deployed to raze the hotel. Similarly, the process of demolishing another of Khattar's hotel in Chuna Mandi has started. "Notices have already been issued and the demolition would begin soon,''officials said.
