Man sentenced to life for rape, murder of girl

CHENNAI MAY 20. A Chengalpattu court has sentenced one person to life imprisonment, two others to ten years each and one more person to four years imprisonment in a case relating to the rape and murder of an 18-year- old girl in the Madras Christian College at Tambaram in May 1999.

Ravikumar alias Gundu Ravi was sentenced to life with an additional 10 years imprisonment. Velankanni alias Kutti and Murugan were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment while a four-year sentence was slapped on Velmurugan alias Velu.

The four had raped and murdered Rajeswari, who visited the college on May 28, 1999, in order to get an application form for admission. Two days later, when she did not return to her house in Kadaperi, her mother filed a complaint at the Selaiyur police station. In the meanwhile, a watchman, who noticed a mutilated body beyond recognition, also filed a complaint at the police station.

A case was registered and investigations revealed that Rajeswari had been raped and murdered. The four persons were arrested following investigations by a police team .Velu, who was the first to confess to the police during interrogation, said he along with Ravikumar, Velankanni and Murugan were in an intoxicated condition when they noticed the girl taking a short cut across the college to go to her friend's house in Ganapathypuram.

They assaulted the girl and had raped her and Ravikumar strangled Rajeswari to death. After investigations, trial commenced at the Chengalpattu Fast Track Court and yesterday, the Judge, Jayabalan, pronounced the verdict.
