Crackdown on polluting autos

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI MAY 20. The city traffic police have decided to invoke Section 190 (2) of the M.V. Act in order to curb the menace of noise pollution caused by autorickshaws, from May 26.

A press release here said that during joint checks conducted along with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board today, 61 of the 81 autos were found to be running with tampered silencers, resulting in a decibel level above than the permitted level of 80 db. Those vehicles with defective silencers would be seized and not permitted to ply on the roads till the defect was rectified.

The police granted auto drivers time till May 25 to rectify their defective silencers and ensure that noise levels were maintained well within the permissible levels.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), G. U. G. Sastry, urged motorists to refrain from fitting duplicate and fancy horns in their vehicles and sought their cooperation to curb the menace of noise pollution.
