Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By K. Manikandan
According to the police, the vehicle owner, Navin Raj, who was pulled up for a similar offence a couple of months ago, had gone around the city on a number of occasions intimidating shop-keepers, especially wine shop-owners. His visit to the Central Prison last night created problems as he was mistaken for a driver of a police vehicle. He had reportedly picked up one person from the vicinity of the Central Prison and a beat constable on duty noticed that the occupants in the vehicle appeared `different'. Suspecting something fishy, he alerted the police patrol over the wireless. A police team seized the vehicle and arrested Navin Raj. Investigations revealed that Navin Raj used to rent the car for cinema shooting. Whenever the vehicle was not sought for shooting, he used to travel in the vehicle. The jeep appeared to be an exact replica of the police patrol vehicles, including the flashing lights, stickers and steel mesh over the windscreens, barring the numberplate that did not have the `G' letter. The police said such vehicles, rented out for film shooting, were barred from use in public as residents might be duped by its appearance.
