The preliminary report from the institute indicated that the monkeys were clubbed to death, contradicting suspicion of poisoning, sources said. The contents of the stomachs of the dead monkeys had also been handed over to the Forensic Science Laboratory to find out if they were poisoned. But the stomach contents were reportedly delivered to the lab a week after the monkeys were found dead. According to the police, the . remains were well preserved and the time gap would not matter. Four of the monkeys that survived were rescued from the site at Hosur Road and taken to the veterinary hospital at Kengeri where they are recovering. The Vice-President of CUPA (Compassion Unlimited Plus Action), Suparna Ganguly, remarked that "this is a serious case of animal abuse... action should be taken fast against those responsible for the deaths of the monkeys.''
