Move to revive welfare schemes a poll gimmick: Cong.

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD May 21. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday criticised the Government for its reported moves to announce a slew of welfare schemes including distribution of house site pattas and provide employment opportunities to one crore youth.

Addressing a press conference here, the PCC chief official spokesman, K Rosaiah, said the Government was making efforts to revive several schemes which were put in cold storage during the past eight years with an eye on the next elections to the Assembly. "There is no allocation for the proposed schemes in the latest budget and the announcements are only aimed at getting political mileage in the run-up to the next elections. Given the financial crisis faced by the State, the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, should clarify about the sources from which the Government is planning to mobilise the huge amounts required for fulfilling its promises,'' he said.

He also criticised the Government for its efforts to approach commercial banks like ICICI and IDBI besides issuing bonds on different counts to mobilise funds for Government programmes. However, it was a proven experience that all programmes aimed at conferring economic benefits only helped the "yellow shirts.'' "After the World Bank started refusing assistance to the State, the Chief Minister is now trying to woo the commercial banks. The banks on their part are finding their best customer in the Chief Minister to invest their surplus funds in the State as they will be assured of returns,'' he said.
