Knitwear workers go on strike

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE May 21. Production in almost all knitwear manufacturing units at Tirupur came to a standstill with the workers going on a two-day strike from today demanding an early solution to the wage issue.

Management association sources told The Hindu that production was hit in almost all the 3,000 units located in and around Tirupur due to the strike called by the Joint Action Council of the knitwear workers' unions. About 1.5-lakh to 2-lakh workers were employed by these units.

Sources in the JAC said the unions had rejected the offer of the management associations for an ``interim'' increase in the wages.

They demanded the management associations increase the basic wage of the previous agreement, in terms of percentage, (their demand included a 50 per cent increase on basic wages) and also said the associations come out clearly on their stand on the other demands. With no progress in the talks, the JAC had decided to go ahead with the 48-hour strike.

The sources said the next round of talks was scheduled for May 24 and the JAC was planning to decide its future course of action at its meeting on May 23.
