Bid to tarnish DMK image, says Karunanidhi

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI May 21. ``If the actual culprits had been apprehended it could have been welcomed,'' the DMK president, M.Karunanidhi, said today, reacting to the arrest of his son, M.K.Azhagiri, in the Kiruttinan murder case.

The police action seemed to indicate that the Jayalalithaa Government wanted to ``hit two mangoes with one stone.''

``The sin is in one place, but the blame is on another,'' he said, adding that Mr. Azhagiri's arrest would not only allow the real culprits to escape, but would also prevent justice from being rendered.

Asked whether the party would press for a CBI probe, he said it was it to be decided. Mr. Azhagiri's arrest was carried out even before the post-mortem report was mad public. From this, the motives could be gauged, he said.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr.Karunanidhi said many leaders were killed in the past. In many cases, some had been falsely implicated and arrested. A similar effort was being made to defame the DMK.

While the murder of the Tuticorin district secretary, K.V.K.Samy, in 1956, was a result of intra-party conflict, the Kiruttinan murder was being falsely portrayed as an inner-party conflict. Asked who he thought were the real culprits, he said it was the job of a ``straight-forward police force'' to find out. When it was pointed out that the police stated that they were arresting the DMK leader on the basis of evidence, he asked how would they say anything else. ``Will the police say that they are arresting (Mr.Azhagiri) without any proof.''

Mr. Karunanidhi claimed that there was no problem between his two sons, Mr.Azhagiri and M.K.Stalin, now and pointed out that he recently wrote on their unity. He denied that Mr.Kiruttinan discussed intra-party problems with him. The DMK chief said that no party was free from groupism and added that groups could not be held responsible for all that happened.

Asked if the problem arose because Mr.Karunanidhi brought his sons into the party, the DMK general secretary, K.Anbazhagan, said Mr.Stalin and Mr.Azhagiri were two ``trees'' which ``grew spontaneously on the fertile DMK soil'' and did not owe their rise to their father. Mr.Stalin was jailed for a year during the Emergency and Mr.Azhagiri was associated with the party from a young age. They had been part of the party's struggles and undergone untold sufferings, he said.

The party treasurer, Arcot N.Veerasamy, pointed to the TMC founder, G.K.Moopanar's son, G.K.Vasan, and the Kumaramangalam family as examples of children taking after their father.

These questions were not raised against any of them.

``Since mine is an ordinary family, these questions are being asked,'' Mr.Karunanidhi said.

Our Tiruchi Special Correspondent reports:

Mr. Azhagiri was lodged in the Tiruchi Central Prison amid tight police security.

There was a mild scuffle at the prison entrance, when local DMK cadres, led by the Deputy Mayor, Anbazhagan, and the former chairman of the District Milk Producers' Cooperative Society, K. K. M. Thangaraj, tried to meet Mr. Azhagiri. When they were refused permission, they indulged in a wordy altercation with the police. After a brief meeting, he was taken inside.
