Bihar doctor rescued, police see MLA's hand

Patna May 21. In a pre-dawn operation, the police today freed eminent neurosurgeon of Bihar Ramesh Chandra from the clutches of his captors, who were allegedly patronised by the Samata Party MLA from Piro, Sunil Pandey.

Dr. Chandra was rescued from Chiraura village under Naubatpur police station barely hours before doctors were to go on an indefinite strike.

The MLA, however, strongly denied his involvement in the crime and demanded a CBI probe to unravel the truth.

The kidnappers, who had demanded a ransom of Rs. 1 crore, had settled for Rs. 50 lakhs, but he was rescued without any payment being made, the DGP, D.P. Ojha, said. Eight kidnappers were arrested.

The kidnapping triggered political sparring between the ruling RJD and the NDA with a Minister in the Rabri Devi Government accusing the Union Minister and BJP leader, C.P. Thakur, and Mr. Pandey of having links with the abductors, a charge strongly denied by both.
