New Delhi
By Our Staff Reporter
The peace march, organised by the DPCC, began in the afternoon from Delhi Gate where all Delhi Congressmen had assembled. The march started soon after the arrival of the Chief Minister and was led by senior AICC leaders including, Mr. Patel, R.K. Dhawan, Anil Shastri, Leader of the House in MCD, Ram Babu Sharma, a large number of Congress MLAs, Councillors, party office-bearers and workers. All Congressmen wore black badges to protest against the rising terrorism and communalism in the country. The march was held to drive home the message of peace and highlight the fact that Rajiv Gandhi had sacrificed his life fighting for this cause. Walking down the stretch of Aruna Asif Ali Road, the peace march reached Rajghat, the samadhi of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. From there they took Ring Road and reached Veer Bhoomi where floral tributes were paid to the beloved leader by all the leaders and workers. Former MP and freedom fighter, Shiv Charan Gupta, administered a pledge to the Congressmen present on the occasion to fight terrorism and the communal virus that was eating into the secular fabric of the Indian polity. The workers were also holding placards and shouting slogans against terrorism, separatism and communal violence. Mr. Chopra exhorted the people to work with renewed vigour and determination to translate Rajiv Gandhi's dream into reality by working for the unity and integrity of the country and uplifting the down trodden and weaker sections of society. He recalled that it was lowering of age of voters from 21 to 18 years by the former Prime Minister which enabled their active participation in nation building. In another function held at the Mavalankar Hall rich tributes were paid to the former Prime Minister by senior Congressmen including former Union Ministers, Natwar Singh and Arjun Singh. The function was organised by the Delhi Industry Minister, Deep Chand Bandhu and his supporters. In fact, Mr. Arjun Singh virtually broke down on the occasion while recalling the contribution of the former Prime Ministers, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, in building the nation and party. Mr. Singh regretted that Congress was today infested with people having personal agenda's and vested interests who were not interested in serving the organisation and strengthening the hands of the party president, Sonia Gandhi, to make the dream of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi come true. Mr. Ahmed Patel urged countrymen to think for the nation first and then about personal gains. He said the need of the hour was to protect the country from the communal forces who are bent upon dividing society in the name of religion and caste. Mr. Bandhu said the need of the hour was to fulfill the dream of Rajiv Gandhi and that could only be done by working towards the goal of installing Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, as the Prime Minister of the country. The Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress led by its president, Rajesh Lilothia, also held a Sadhbhavana Yatra and a blood donation camp to mark the occasion. They also took a pledge to wage a crusade against the rising communalism and terrorism which threatens the security of the country.
