Letters to the Editor
Sir, I endorse Mushirul Hasan's suggestion in his article, "The madrassas in India" ( May 21 ), that there is a serious need for a constructive and bold humanism that would restate and reinterpret Islamic educational ideas in the contemporary social and cultural environment. But, the fundamental reconstruction of Muslim educational thought is not possible without the active involvement and participation of secular intellectuals of the community. If the Muslim secular leadership succeeds in freeing the madrassas from dogmatic theology and religious insularity, these schools, with their wide reach and influence, can be transformed into centres of higher learning and religious fulfilment.
