Public apathy

Sir, — The Amritsar-Mumbai Mail fire tragedy can be traced to the overall apathy that seems to prevail on all fronts in our country. The travelling public rarely take up issues seriously if not assiduously with the travelling ticket examiner or the officials at the stations. Be it excessive passengers without reserved tickets in reserved bogies, proliferation of hawkers and beggars blocking the entry/exit doors, lack of water in the wash basins or toilets — most people lie back leaving it to be taken up by some passenger. All of us seem to have a tendency to wake up only when some serious tragedy takes place and that too for a brief while and then all is forgotten.

N. Anantaraman,
Chennai
