Indian Railways takes honours

NEW DELHI MAY 23. Indian Railways has won its maiden World Railway volleyball championship beating Yugoslavian Railway 3-1, in the final in France on Friday.

Indian Railways, which had failed to make it to the super league in the last edition in 1999, put up an exemplary performance in the championship that featured teams from 16 countries.

In the 13th edition held in France, India was logged in pool `D' with Belarus, Slovakia and Finland.

In the pool matches, Indian Railways scored 3-0 identical wins against all the three teams. It beat Finland 25-18, 25-14, 25-19; edged past Belarus 25-19, 25-14, 25-21; and defeated Slovakia 25-19, 25-20, 25-19.

In the super league, Indian Railways was placed in group `I' with the defending champion Russian Railway and German Railway. Indian Railways won both its matches to qualify for the final.
