This Day That Age
Talking to newsmen in Ootacamund on the 25th, Revenue Minister Mr. M. A. Manickavelu Naicker indicated that the Government might reconsider its Prohibition policy being considered de novo after the formation of the Andhra State, due to the straitened situation created by famine, huge remissions, and dwindling of sales tax collections. But Prohibition, which had undoubtedly benefited the poorer sections, would not be completely given up, he added. Asked about his reaction to the representations made to the Government from various quarters against legislation to prevent cutting of trees in the Nilgiris as a soil conservation measure, the Minister said the Government proposed to introduce the Bill only to benefit the people of Nilgiris; changes could be made to obviate hardships likely for owners of wooded land. As regards land assignment in the Nilgiris, the rules would be liberalised to benefit landless people, subject to the supreme need to ensure satisfactory soil conservation.
