dated May 26, 1953: 'Friendly' Kidnapping Foiled

A Reuter report from Jakarta dated 23rd May quoted Indonesian Minister Arnold Mononutu to say that a bid by some young men to kidnap Indonesian President Soekarno during his visit to Semarang had been foiled. Mr. Mononutu said the aims of the youth were friendly, and they had wanted to persuade the President to change the capital of Indonesia from Jakarta to Jogojakarta.
