`Mayawati must ensure fair payment to farmers'

NEW DELHI May 25 .The new Union Agriculture Minister, Rajnath Singh, today said here that the Mayawati Government must ensure that the sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh gave a fair price to the sugarcane farmers.

Referring to the on-going agitation by the cane growers in the State, Mr. Singh said the State Government must ensure that the mills paid a fair price to the farmers. The crisis is one of the major issues now faced by Mr. Singh.

In a related development, reports said, the BJP president of the State unit, Vinay Katiyar, who has embarked on ``nav chetna'' rally, faced widespread protest from farmers, who demanded a fair price for the sugarcane procured from them.
