Jammu & Kashmir
The tentative schedule includes addressing a convocation at the Jammu University and a visit to a school, sources said. The visit was likely to take place in the third week of June. Security arrangements were being reviewed for his visit. The former President, K. R. Narayanan, had visited the State in 1997. This will be the first visit by Mr. Kalam to the State after taking over as the President. He would also be presenting the President's Colour to the State Police for its display of exemplary courage in tackling militancy. The President is also expected to visit Leh. The visit would also prove to be a shot in the arm for the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, who has been stressing the need for such high profile visits to give a major fillip to the tourism industry in the State. Last month the Prime Minister, Atal Behari, Vajpayee visited the strife-torn State and announced fresh peace initiative towards Pakistan. PTI
