Homicide case against Senegal envoy's son

NEW DELHI MAY 25. The son of the Senegal Ambassador to India allegedly thrashed his father's driver to death outside a five-star hotel here on Saturday night after the latter refused to hand over the keys to the envoy's car. The incident took place around midnight when the Senegal Ambassador, Ahmed El Mansaur, and his son, Mansaur Ali, went to Hotel Taj to attend a party, organised to celebrate African Day.

Around 10.20 p.m., a security guard deployed at the hotel's entrance gate on Sardar Patel Marg, saw the 32-year-old driver, Dilvar, and Mr. Ali going towards the gate. He heard the two shouting at each other. After a while, when he went to the gate he saw Mr. Ali, who was in a white robe, going towards the Convention Hall where the party was on.

The guard was told that Dilvar was lying on the road in an unconscious state with serious injuries on the face.

It took around 10 minutes for him to inform his superiors who in turn called police. Dilvar was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Investigations revealed that Mr. Ali, who was allegedly drunk, wanted to drive his father's car. He asked Dilvar to give him the keys of the vehicle. However, Dilvar, who had reportedly been cautioned by the Ambassador not to give the keys to his son, refused to comply, which led to the heated exchange of words.

While police were told that it was a minor scuffle and Mr. Ali did not attack Dilvar with an intention to kill him, the driver's relatives alleged that he had been beaten very severely. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Manoj Kumar Lall, a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered at Chanakyapuri police station.

Though police cannot arrest Mr. Ali on this ground as he enjoys diplomatic immunity, they would send a report on the incident to the External Affairs Ministry, which would be passed on to the Senegal counterparts for action against him.
