`Indian domestic worker tortured'

WASHINGTON MAY 26. A case of alleged torture and exploitation of an Indian domestic help brought here by an Asian diplomat has been reported by a newspaper here today.

Identifying her only as Rita, the Washington Post said she was an exploited worker in an embassy who was "in need of rescue".

Rita had been abused and beaten during her 11 months in a diplomat's Potomac home.

She worked 16 to 18 hours a day, seven days a week.

Rita was brought here under a visa programme designed for diplomats and executives with international organisations.

According to the paper, Rita has been sheltered by several Americans who were outraged by her exploitation. — PTI
