Not a privileged lot

Sir, — Software developers and programmers may be a privileged lot in India but not so after they cross the borders. There is an uproar and whipping up of emotions in the media and clamour for Government intervention when visa-violators are apprehended in other countries such as Malaysia and the Netherlands, for instance.

Every country is now taking extra precautions about foreign visitors on their soil especially because of a large number of terrorists and sympathisers on the prowl. It may be recalled that the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, gave a call some time ago to law enforcement agencies to apprehend all foreigners overstaying in India and "throw them out". Why can't the other countries do the same? Under such circumstances, the Indian Government should issue proper "advisories" to its nationals not to overstay their visas in foreign countries.

Madison, U.S.
