Tohra hospitalised

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHANDIGARH MAY 27. The veteran Akali leader and former president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), G.S. Tohra, was hospitalised after a massive heart attack late last evening. While he was reported to have regained consciousness on Tuesday, his condition continued to be critical.

Mr. Tohra, who was at the residence of one of his supporters in Patiala, complained of acute pain in the chest.

His son-in-law, Harmel Singh, a former Punjab Minister, rushed him to the hospital where he was admitted to the ICU immediately. When he was brought to the Patiala Heart Institute, he was reported to have fallen unconscious.

While his condition was extremely critical last evening, Mr. Tohra's grandson, Harinderpal Singh, said the doctors allowed his father to meet the veteran leader for a short while. Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the Institute, Gurpreet Singh Sidhu, expressed satisfaction at the response to the treatment.

Close family sources said Mr. Tohra had not completely been restored to his active lifestyle after his cardiac surgery last December.

During the past few days he had begun to exert himself to clinch the Akali unity issue, which the family feels affected him.

It was last evening when the decision of the apex Sikh clergy to invite him to Akal Takht on June 5 as part of efforts for Akali unity had been conveyed to him.
