Ko. Si. Mani emerges supreme DMK leader in Thanjavur

By G. Srinivasan

Thanjavur May 27. With his election as the Thanjavur district secretary of the DMK on Saturday, Ko. Si. Mani, former minister, and the present Kumbakonam MLA, continues to maintain his supremacy in the local DMK politics.

Mr. Mani, has been the ``blue-eyed boy'' of the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, ever since he entered politics and has remained a staunch loyalist.

What makes the election of Mr. Mani, unopposed, significant is that the district which was bifurcated into — Thanjavur south and Thanjavur north and had two district secretaries — has now been merged into one and Mr. Mani has been made the district secretary.

This, according to party sources is to set at rest inner party politics and give Mr. Mani the supremacy. ``He is our permanent district secretary'', said a former MLA.

When Mr. Mani was the Local Administration Minister between 1996-2000, Thanjavur district was divided into two by the high command and separate district secretaries posted. A. V. Subramanian of Madukkur became the Thanjavur south district secretary and S. Kalayanasundaram of Pampapadayur near Kumbakonam became the north district secretary.

After the change of Government, Mr. Mani was made zonal convenor-in charge of Thanjavur-North and Thanjavur south, Tiruvarur and Nagpattinam districts to give control over the district secretaries.
