Ex-mayor paints NTR statue

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL May 27. The former mayor of Kurnool city, Bangi Anantaiah, painted the statue of N.T. Rama Rao at the collectorate on the eve of 80th birth anniversary of the leader on Wednesday.

Mr. Anantaiah and his followers cleaned the statue and applied gold coloured paint.

Mr. Anantaiah said because of N.T. Rama Rao, people like him could enter politics which was earlier the bastion of the upper classes. Rama Rao was responsible for providing quota for the backward classes in the local bodies. He said NTR would go down in the history as the one who implemented Rs. 2 a kilo rice scheme and pensions for the aged and widows. He also made history by signing the order of prohibition immediately after assuming office.

Mr. Ananthaiah said by introducing the mandal system, Rama Rao uprooted the age-old revenue system which kept the common man in darkness. The mandal system helped in taking the administration closer to the people.

The supporters of the former mayor, Madar Saheb, Venkateswaralu, Lakshmaiah, Chinna Narasimhulu and others took part in the programme.
