This Day That Age
Mr. C. V. Narahari Rao wrote in a letter to the Editor: "I cite an excerpt from a recent publication intended as a tourist guide the Time Table & Guide No. 4 of the Southern Railway (Indian Railways Centenary Number). On page 251 it is stated "According to the principles of Hindu Iconography, the idol of Sri Venkateswara has the attributes of both Hara or Siva and of Hari or Vishnu a coalescence of the Preserving and Destroying Deities of the Hindu Triad found in one and the same idol. The idol has four arms, two in the rear, one carrying the Sankha or conch and the other the Chakra or wheel and two in front, one in Abhaya pose and the other resting on the hip. On both the front arms is to be seen the `Bhujanga Valaya' or the girdle of the serpent, an emblem of Siva.' There is no reason why the proposed Tirupati College of Theology should confine itself to the teaching of any one system of Philosophy. It would be best to teach all comparative systems of the Hindu religion, rather Indian Philosophy in general, whether it is the undivided Madras state or the future Andhra Government that may actually start the College."
