Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is heartening to read that India has approved the resumption of the Delhi-Lahore bus service a silver lining in the otherwise dark cloud over the sub-continent. However, it is a pity that it will only be a bi-weekly service, which, at best, will be a token one with very little utility. India should make it a daily service the Pakistan bus can run three days and the Indian bus for three days at least for the first six months to cope up with the rush, which can be expected due to the closure of the travel links for the last year and a half. The Samjhauta Express too should be made a daily feature. Consulates should be opened in Mumbai and Karachi. Why not the Khokrapar-Munabao rail link, closed since the 1965 war, be reopened? So also the sea link between Karachi and Mumbai.
Salahuddin Mirza,
Sir, There cannot be a military solution to the Kashmir imbroglio. Pakistan has to decide whether it wants hostile or peaceful relations with India. Its diplomatic manoeuvres have always been followed by escalation in tensions. Pakistan has to create a congenial atmosphere for parleys by stemming infiltration.
Krishna Prasad,
Sir, It is heartening to note that India and Pakistan are taking confidence building measures. It is clear that there is pressure from the major powers that the relations should be normalised and that any danger of a sudden conflict is removed. The peace process is a long one but is the only thing that is much cheaper than any armed conflict to settle issues. We should give peace a chance.
D.B.N. Murthy,
