Stressed jawans

Sir, — That a Central Industrial Security Force jawan in Mumbai killed his boss following refusal of leave to go for his father's operation and take his mother on a pilgrimage shows that the authorities are not concerned about the welfare of their personnel.

Because of such working conditions, many jawans suffer from mental disorders and react in such a dangerous manner.

V. Rajesh,
Mumbai

Sir, — It is hazardous for officers in the military and police in dealing with disgruntled subordinates having easy access to arms and ammunition. Personnel serving in places far away become depressed due to long absence from home and other domestic problems. Officers should be sensitive to their needs and deal with their reasonable requests sympathetically. I am reminded in this context of the advice of the then Madras Commissioner Of Police, Hume: "Deal with the men gently and avoid pin-pricking and petty-fogging."

A.V. Srinivasan,
Chennai
