AIADMK MLA's house attacked, 10 Dalit activists held

By Our Staff Reporter

Coimbatore May 28. Ten persons belonging to the Dalit Viduthalai Katchi led by their State president, Sengottayan, have been arrested on charges of attacking the house and car of the AIADMK MLA from Avanashi, J.S. Mahalingam, late last night.

According to the police, a group of persons allegedly led by Sengottayan along with Shanmugam, district president, pelted stones damaging the windowpanes of the house and the car of the MLA.

The police said Shanmugam and the legislator had a quarrel the previous evening over the issue of allegedly abusing the MLA at a demonstration organised to demand basic amenities for a local Dalit colony.

After the wordy duel, Shanmugam preferred a complaint with the police, stating that the MLA had assaulted him. The MLA lodged a complaint stating that Shanmugam had "threatened him with dire consequences".

The quarrel resulted in a clash, the police said. Soon after the incident, the police arrested and remanded the 10 activists. Cases have been registered against them under Sections 3 and 4 of the Tamil Nadu Public Properties Damages Act and IPC 307 for attempt to murder. The police have also seized two cars belonging to Sengottayan used by the accused.
