Chowgule is champion

MUMBAI MAY 28. Chaitanya Chowgule maintained focus and concentration for two more races to clinch the title on Wednesday, the concluding day of the Provogue National Optimist (under-16) sailing championship.

The Goan youngster, confident and mature beyond his age of 11, built on his lead by winning the eighth race and gained a second spot in the ninth for a winning tally of 10 points, 21 less than second placed Xerxes Bamboat.

The results (8th race): 1. Chaitanya Chowgule, 2. Amir Noronha, 3. Abhishek Mhatre, 4. Ismail Shaikh, 5. Rohit Ashok. 9th race: 1. Trunal Helegaonkar, 2. Chaitanya, 3. Rohit Ashok, 4. Prathamesh Bhagwe, 5. Kabir Tombat.

Final results (points include two discards, race positions in brackets): 1. Chaitanya Chowgule (8, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2); 2. Xerxes Bamboat (7, 3, 1, 2, 2, 10, 6, 16, 19) 31; 3. Trunal Helegaonkar (1, 15, 10, 3, 11, 5, 2, 11, 1) 33; 4. Zeal Kapadia (6, 11, 9, 5, 5, 3, 1, 9, 6) 35; 5. Trisha Sabir (4, 5, 7, 53, 3, 7, 15, 8, 8) 42; 6. Kabir Tombat (10, 13, 8, 4, 4, 6, 11, 7, 5).
