Cabinet panel for peace efforts in Marad

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 28. The Kerala Cabinet today set up a sub-committee to deal with restoration of peace at Marad in Kozhikode district where communal elements had massacred nine persons.

The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, told presspersons after a Cabinet meeting that the committee would comprise the Public Works Minister, M. K. Muneer, the Minister for Cooperation, M.V. Raghavan, and the Health Minister, P. Sankaran.

The committee will hold discussions with all sections, the Chief Minister said.

Asked about the demand for entrusting the mosque taken over by the Government to the Wakf Board, the Chief Minister said this was a matter to be decided by the district administration and the police.Mr. Antony said the State police had received information from the Mumbai police regarding plans of terrorists to carry out bomb blasts in Kerala. However, the information pertained to plans drawn up in 2001. However, the Government was not taking the matter lightly. The Government would have to be more vigilant. The police were coordinating with other States to prevent terrorist attacks.

New DGP

He announced that the Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, P. K. Hormees Tharakan, would be the new Director General of Police. He replaces K. J. Joseph, who is retiring on May 31. Mr. Tharakan's place will be taken by Upendranatha Kurup, who would be promoted to the rank of Director General of Police.Replying to questions, the Chief Minister said the allegation that the private secretary of the Chairman of the Public Service Commission had taken bribes, promising inclusion of an applicant in the rank list for appointment of police sub-inspector, was serious. However, he was not commenting on the matter as he had not talked to the Chairman.

Asked whether the Government favoured politicisation of the police force like his Minister, K.R. Gouri, who had remarked there was nothing wrong about it, Mr. Antony said that political divisions did not exist in the police as in the past.
