Mr. Shekhawat, the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Mangaldas Patel, and other praised the contributions of Savarkar to the freedom movement and advised the people to follow his examples in patriotism. The Congress legislature party had on Tuesday decided to boycott the ceremony in view of the prevailing controversy over the unveiling of Veer Savarkar's portrait in the central hall of Parliament and the Maharashtra Assembly. The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Amarsinh Chaudhary, when consulted by the Chief Minister earlier had given his consent to the installation of his portrait, but was opposed by the State Congress president, Shankarsinh Waghela. The decision by the party's central leadership to boycott a similar ceremony in the Parliament house earlier led Mr. Chaudhary to follow suit in Gujarat.
