Heat wave continues

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR MAY 28. An intense heat wave continued to sweep most parts of Orissa with Bhubaneswar recording a maximum day temperature of 44.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The city had recorded a maximum day temperature of 44.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the highest since 1998 when over 2,000 persons had died in the State due to sunstroke.

``Heat wave condition is likely to prevail over some parts of the State during next 24 hours,'' the weatherman at the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre said this evening. The day temperature had shot up due to the northwesterly wind blowing from the Chhotnagpur plateau over the State.

The situation was worse in the interior districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bolangir and Kalahandi. The Titilagarh town in Bolangir had recorded a maximum day temperature of 48.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Although reports of heat wave-related deaths are pouring in from different districts, only six deaths have been confirmed to be due to sunstroke so far. More than 50 such reported cases are being verified by the authorities in different districts.

With the heat being unrelenting, taps, wells and tanks have all gone dry in many parts of the State adding to the drinking water crisis.
