Pointing out that May recorded very high temperature with Chennai recording 44.4 C (111.9 F) on May 22, the Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, S.R. Ramanan, said on May 11 last year, Nungambakkam recorded 43.4 Celsius (110.1 F) and Meenambakkam 43.8 Celsius (110.8 F). While severe heatwave conditions prevailed over parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Telengana, moderate conditions prevailed over northern parts of North Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and southern parts of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Rainfall has occurred at a few places over Lakshadweep and isolated rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Yesterday, mercury soared to 43 degrees Celsius in Vellore, closely followed by Tirupathur, Parangipettai, Palayamkottai and Chennai Airport recording 41degrees Celsius and Cuddalore, Chennai Nungambakkam, Pondicherry and Trichy registering 40 Celsius. While Vellore and the Chennai airport touched the 43-plus Celsius mark, the Madurai airport received rainfall of 5 cm, Thammampatti and Valparai, 4 cm each, and Omlaur-3 cm Rain had been appreciable in some areas this month with the Tiruchi airport recording 4 cm, Ginjee, Perambalur, Tiruchi - 3 cm, Manaparai, Thuraiyur, Arani - 2 cm. On May 26, Perambalur recorded 6 cm, Omalur and Usilampatti 5 cm, and Vallam - 4 cm, Keeranur, Pollachi, Udumalpettai, and Tiruchi airport - 2 cm.
