Observing that the Kashmir resolution would require "serious compromises,'' Mr. Vajpayee said, ``I am prepared to negotiate with him.'' In an interview to Der Speigel, a widely-circulated German daily, he welcomed the restriction imposed by Pakistan on the militant outfit, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. However, ``other steps will have to follow.'' ``Just now Pakistan seems to have prohibited the most radical group of Mujahideen which operated in Kashmir. If this is the case and has real consequences, I can only welcome this step. Others have to follow, however,'' he said. Mr. Vajpayee declared that he would retire if he failed in his efforts for peace with Pakistan. Asked what he would do if his "third and final" attempt for peace with Pakistan were to fail, Mr. Vajpayee said: "I have to accept my defeat, then I retire." UNI
