Two killed in copter crash near Everest

The helicopter, carrying porters for the 50th anniversary celebrations of Mount Everest's conquest, crashed after it veered off course within sight of the Base Camp's tents, killing two and injuring seven.

Kathmandu, May 28. Two passengers were killed and nine others seriously injured today when a helicopter carrying porters for the 50th anniversary celebrations of Mount Everest's conquest crashed near the mountain's base camp. ..

The MI-17 Helicopter belonging to Simrik Air, a private airline, crashed at 9.45 a.m. local time, Radio Nepal said. While one of the crew members and a Sherpa guide were killed during the accident, the pilot of the chopper was seriously injured, it said.

The chopper was carrying five porters, a mountain guide and four crew members and was to pick up Everesters fresh from their climb of the world's tallest peak.

Nepal is currently hosting the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the first successful ascent to the Everest. -- PTI
