HYDERABAD: N.C. Vij, Chief of Army Staff, inaugurated the Army College of Dental Sciences at Jawaharnagar in Shamirpet mandal of Ranga Reddy district on Wednesday with a call to extend the welfare services of the Army to the families of retired and martyred soldiers. He announced that over the next five years, upto ten more similar institutions would be opened by the Army in different parts of the country, with Hyderabad poised to emerge as a major centre for Army institutions due to the "generous'' land allotments by the State Government. General Vij specifically thanked the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, for providing all help for the establishment of this dental college. S.P. Sreekumar, Commandant of the Andhra Sub Area and Chairman of the Dental College, said that it was in Oct. 1996 that a decision had been taken to start such a college. The State Government provided 20 acres of land for the purpose and in 1999 it was affiliated to the NTR University of Health Sciences. In 2000, the College was affiliated to the Dental Council of India. Brigadier Sreekumar said that admissions had begun in 2001 and already two batches of students are studying in the college, which till recently was operating from temporary premises in Trimulgherry. Speaking on the occasion, A. Natarajan, Adjutant General, said that the college had been set up under the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES). G. S. Sihota, Army Commander, Southern Command, R.K. Mehta, Commandant, MCEME, P.P.S. Bhandari, GOC 21 Corp, were among the senior army officials who attended the event.
