Talking to newsmen here, Mr. Chauhan said it was to the credit of the Sheila Dikshit Government that the results of the Government-run and Government-aided schools had improved dramatically during the past four years. Innovative measures by the Delhi Government and the increased motivation levels among the school students are the result of coordinated efforts by the teachers, Vidya Kalyan Samitis and the students. Mr. Chauhan said there had been a marked improvement in the pass percentage of government-aided schools for Class X. It had increased to 59 per cent this year against last year's level of 56.50 per cent. The results of the Delhi Government schools had been consistently improving over the past four years, rising from 34.6 per cent pass in 1999 to 48.87 per cent in 2003. The percentage of students placed in compartment had come down from 34.68 per cent in 2002 to 31.85 per cent in 2003. Cases of unfair means had also registered a decline from 131 last year to 33 this year. The Minister said the number of schools achieving 100 per cent pass result had gone up from a mere three last year to eight this year. The number of schools achieving more than 90 per cent result had gone up from 17 last year to 29 this year. He attributed the improved results in Delhi schools to increased recruitment of additional teachers by the Government. Regular and comprehensive inspection of schools by the officials of the Education Directorate and clear directions and guidance to the principals and teachers from the Government and the directorate. The Government had also ensured provision of model question papers for the students and extra classes during winter and autumn breaks. Mr. Chauhan said disciplinary action would be taken against the head of schools who have not performed well. It would also be ensured that vacancies of teachers would be brought to the level of 2 per cent against the current level of around 5 per cent. Special attention would be paid to improving staff satisfaction level so that teachers and other staff have higher motivational levels. In another initiative, it has been decided to start round-the-year teachers' training with special emphasis on upgrading school infrastructure. Apart from this, incentives would be given to head of schools whose institutions show improved results in the coming year.
