Curriculum to include laproscopic training

Chennai May 28. Laproscopic training will form part of the teaching curriculum at Government hospitals from next academic year, the Director of Medical Education (schemes), J. R. Vijayalakshmi, said today.

To start with, the Stanley Medical College would impart training to all the residents and postgraduates from June 2003, Dr. Vijayalakshmi said. She also promised regular interaction between government and private sector to enable complete health delivery to people.

Participating in a programme on Laproscopy, organised by Apollo Hospitals, Tondiarpet, here, she released a CD of a laproscopic surgery performed at the hospital on a patient from Madhya Pradesh. The first copy was handed over to Medical Council of India member, V. Kanakaraj.

An exhaustive video presentation detailing the origin of laproscopy, technical advances, therapeutic application of modern laproscopy was made by senior consultant at the hospital, P.Balaji.

Laproscopic surgery involved lesser hospitalisation, faster recovery and earlier return to activity, Dr. Balaji said adding that information about the surgery was being recorded and handed over to the patient's family.

Apollo Hospitals medical superintendent, Satyanarayana Rao, Jayakar Thomas and operations manager also spoke.
