Fire in waste paper godown

CHENNAI MAY 28. A devastating fire destroyed several tonnes of waste paper meant for export at a godown in Moolakadai this morning.

A senior Fire Service Personnel was hospitalised after he fell down during the fire-fighting exercise.

The fire that broke out around 10 a.m at the private godown adjacent the GNT Road, consumed the bundles of paper that had been piled up.

Fire tenders from Sembium, Manali, Red Hills, Vyasarpadi, Teynampet, Washermanpet, Villivakkam and Egmore stations battled to bring the flames under control.

Sources said the fire could be thoroughly extinguished only by Thursday morning.

They said nearly 600 tonnes of paper, valued at several lakhs were destroyed.

The Divisional Fire Officer, Bhakthavatsalam, was injured on the left leg when he fell down during the fire fighting exercise.
