Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
The Sammelan is the second, being held at the end of the second phase of the yatra organised by the Rashtriya Jal Biradri led by Magsaysay Awardee Rajendra Singh. It features a range of speakers who will emphasise that micro level community managed water schemes provide the solution to the problems of water sustainability, rather than huge cost-intensive and environmentally disastrous projects. Stakeholders from many sectors are listed to participate in the two-day event, which is being inaugurated by Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal of the Kanchi Sankara Math. The programme covers such topics as the relationship between water and spirituality, Constitutional and legal status of community water rights, duties, water scenario, drought prone areas, rivers, interlinking proposals, and the role of various sections, such as activists, politicians, academicians, NGOs, the Government and the media. A cultural programme on water issues will be performed by the DHAN foundation on May 29 evening, according to a press release from the Jal Biradri. Among the 200 participants expected for the event are prominent NGOs, advocates of the Supreme Court, the Karnataka Water Resources Minister, the Geological Survey, writers, and development economists.
