Ulsoor Lake project may be delayed

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore May 28. The Rs. 6.8-crore project to rejuvenate Ulsoor Lake is likely to be delayed because of some "unexpected difficulties". The work is expected to be completed by the end of June with the original schedule getting upset.

P.Shyamaraju of Shyamaraju and Co, contractor undertaking the project for Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, said the truck strike in April was one reason for the delay.

"We wanted the lake ready to receive inflow of water from the first monsoon rains. The idea was to drain out the first inflow of water and have the lake ready for the next spell of rains and this may become difficult now," he said.

Most of the work on the pathway-jogging track around the lake is over as also relocation of sewage pipes earlier flowing into it. Because of careful planning, it was not found necessary to relocate the bridge near Venkatachalam Circle.

The sedimentation tank has been built and the rainwater will first flow through it and the sediment trapped there before the water gets into the lake itself.

Work is going on at the "immersion tank", which will be the only spot where Ganesha idols can be immersed in future. The islands on the lake are getting a facelift.

It is a different story at Sankey Tank, another project contracted to Shyamaraju and Co. The path for walkers and joggers over the bund has been laid on three sides of the road.

The northern bund is a private property and the BMP is said to be taking steps to hand over this portion to the contractors.

If that happens soon, most of the work at Sankey Tank can be completed in the next 15 days.

At this manmade lake, facilities for boating with a jetty, are being provided.

Work is going on as scheduled at Yediyur Lake where a new culvert has been constructed and cleaning work is fast progressing.

This lake is expected to be in its renovated state by June end.
