Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
The delegation, led by the Parliamentary panel chairman, R.B.S. Verma, told officials here that a recommendation would be made to the Centre to upgrade both institutions into centres of excellence. The purpose of the panel's visit was to conduct an on-the-spot study of the functioning of hospitals/institutes of traditional systems of medicines in the city. In this connection, the Parliamentary panel later visited the Government Homoeopathic and Siddha institutions in the city. The discussion mainly centred on issues pertaining to the development of infrastructure for treatment, teaching and research, besides the impact of policies and programmes of the Government being implemented for popularising indigenous systems of treatment. Finetuning modern research into Ayurveda was also among the major concerns of the Parliamentary team. A proposal to start district-level Ayurvedic referral centres was also discussed with Ayurveda College officials. The Ayurveda College authorities availed of the opportunity to submit a Rs. 50-crore master plan for the overall development of the institution. However, Union Health Ministry officials accompanying the JPC delegation promised to take up the matter once the institution furnished proper fund utilisation records for the money previously tendered by the Centre.
