Make full use of talent, women told

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 29. The creative skills of women should be used to shed light on their woes, the Culture Minister, G. Karthikeyan, has said.

Delivering the keynote address at the valedictory function of the 60-day documentary workshop organised under the aegis of the Visual Media Co-operative Society here on Tuesday, he said the 25 participants who were initiated into the process of film-making should utilise their talent to focus on the problems of women around them.

"Suicides and divorce cases and sale of liquor are rampant in the State. Women have to bear the brunt of all these evils and hence they should lay accent on such issues," he said.

The cinema of yesteryear was noted for the histrionic skills of the artistes.

There should be an urge to imbibe the latest technological developments.

But the mainstay should be life and culture without which nothing would survive, he said.

The society president, V. K. Joseph, in his presidential address described the workshop as a major step in women empowerment. Cinema being a powerful medium, its grasp would help women gain more power, he said.

The noted actress, Srividya, called upon the participants to keenly observe life and learn lessons so that it can be effectively uses.

The workshop would help bring up women directors of international standards soon, she said.

Beena Paul Venugopal, editor, made an evaluation of the workshop and Chandrasenan welcomed the gathering.

Five documentaries made by the participants were screened later.
