Abducted girl's parents approach rights groups

By K. M. Dayashankar

KARIMNAGAR MAY 29. The parents of a minor girl, who was abducted by People's War naxalites from Patha Rudraram village of Tadicherla mandal, have approached the national and international human rights organisations urging them to intervene and ensure release of their daughter from the clutches of naxalites.

The parents, with the help of the Godavarikhani police, sent e-mail to various human rights groups, including the National Human Rights Commission, the Amnesty International, the Human Rughts Watch, the AP State Human Rights Commission, the APCLC and other groups on Thursday to intervene and secure release of their daughter.

In the e-mail message, the parents, Narsingojula Laxminarayana Chary and Sarojana, residents of Patha Rudraram village of Tadicherla mandal, stated that the PW naxalites led by the area committee secretary, Srikanth alias Sammaiah, had abducted their daughter, Narsingojula Padma (14), on May 24 from the marriage pandal. Her marriage was to take place the next day.

They said that some militants of the village had induced the bride and taken her away in the bridal dress into the forests clandestinely. "We had spent about Rs 40,000 on her marriage by creating debts," they said and pointed out that "due to stoppage of marriage of our daughter by the naxalites, we are humiliated in the village and we lost our self-esteem''. They expressed fear of safety of their daughter.

"The parents of adolescents children are worried in the region with the act of naxalites who were abducting young children and causing harm to the families and the children''. The naxalites in the name of revolution were pushing the region into backwardness, they said, adding that the naxalites were also violating human rights by abducting boys and girls. The parents urged the human rights groups to intervene in the matter and ensure the release of their daughter at the earliest.

It may be recalled that the PW naxalites had earlier abducted minor girls -- Gomasa Padma from Katkupalli village of Kataram mandal, Kota Puspha from Thungur village of Sarangapur mandal, Lingampalli Manjula from Vattimalla village in Konaraopeta mandal and Shanigarapu Amrutha from Vallemkunta village of Tadicherla mandal. However, all the girls were released following the parents approaching human rights organisations.

The Godavarikhani DSP, L.S Chouhan, told The Hindu on Thursday that they came to know of the abduction only when the parents approached the Koyyur police on Wednesday. "We played the role of a mediator in approaching various human rights organisations by helping the parents," he said and added that they had already succeeded by ensuring the release of a minor girl -- Gomasa Padma -- from the clutches of naxalites by approaching human rights organisations. He said they would continue the campaign till the release of the abducted girl.
