SFI to protest before district courts

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA MAY 29. The Students Federation of India(SFI) would organise protest marches before all district courts in the State on June 5 to p rotest against the recent judgment of the Kerala High Court giving college managements the freedom to ban politics on campuses.

The SFI State secretary, G.B. Rajesh, who announced this at a press conference here today, said the order was against the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. He demanded that the State Government file an appeal before the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict.

The SFI leader said his organisation would take the lead in uniting all student organisations against the move to ban politics on campus. A convention of student organisations would be held on June 4 to discuss the issue, he said.

The SFI all-India president, K.K. Ragesh, said there were apprehensions that a recent verdict of the Supreme Court giving freedom to professional college managements to decide the fee structure in their institutions would be interpreted by managements to further tighten their absolute control over the institutions.

Mr Ragesh noted that the new court order would result in a situation in which the Government does not have any control over the education sector. The various social obligations to be complied by the managements following the verdict in the Unnikrishnan case have become irrelevant in the new situation.

Mr Ragesh noted that the professional colleges in the State were charging very high fees compared to the professional colleges in the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The SFI leaders said that professional colleges in the State had violated the guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) while determining the fee structure.
