Chernovol bags gold

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD MAY 29. The men's 100 metres saw a good contest among Gennadiy Chernovol of Kazakhstan, Suwornprateep Sittichai of Thailand and Ekkachai Junthana also of Thailand in the Asian Grand Prix athletics meet here on Wednesday. All three of them went neck and neck till the half way mark. But thereafter the Kazkhstan sprinter who was the favourite here managed to break ahead by a narrow margin to win the gold.

The men's javelin throw was once again won by Sergey Voynov of Uzbekistan. The Busan Asiad bronze medallist won the gold here with 78.36 mts and he improved upon his distance of 76.00 mts which had fetched him the gold last year in Hyderabad.

As expected India picked up a lot of lesser medals but no golds this time for the host country. India got two silvers and seven bronze medals to end up eighth on the medal tally. Kazakhstan with four golds and one silver took the top spot while Sri Lanka also did well to take two golds and four silver for the second spot on the table. Thailand with two gold and one silver was in third place.
