E. Ahmed offers prayers at Marad mosque

By Our Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE MAY 29. The IUML secretary and MP, E. Ahmed, today visited Marad, his first visit to the seaside village after the ghastly killing of nine persons there on May 2. Marad is part of Manjeri Lok Sabha constituency which Mr Ahmed represents in the Lok Sabha.

IUML leaders had been staying clear of the scene of violence to avoid aggravation of the tension which had escalated after the carnage.

The Public Works Minister, M.K. Muneer, who has been quietly carrying out peace initiatives at the behest of his party leadership, was the first IUML leader to visit Marad. Mr. Ahmed is only the second IUML leader to visit the scene of the crime.

Mr Ahmed told The Hindu he was deeply touched by the response to his visit to the office of the Marad Araya Samajam and the inmates of the houses of three of the victims of the attack.

He also offered worship at the Marad mosque which has been taken over by the Government after deadly weapons used in the attack were found hidden there.

Mr. Ahmed pointed out there was no ban on offering worship inside the mosque even though some people were under such an impression. Anyone not having a criminal record was free to enter the mosque to offer prayers even though it was under Government control.

Speaking over telephone, the Araya Samajam president, K. Dasan, said the police had informed them in advance that the MP wished to visit Marad. The police authorities were told the Araya Samajam had no objections to his visit.
