`Implement quota for STs'

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry May 29. The Pondicherry Scheduled Tribes People's Federation has urged the Union Territory administration to ensure that ST students are extended the one per cent reservation in admission to educational institutions.

K. Ramkumar, president, who led a demonstration by the students' wing of the organisation today, said the struggle for reservation for the STs had been going on for nearly 18 years. The STs in other States and Union Territories had been enjoying the benefit of reservation. But in Pondicherry, they were yet to be given the benefit.

Earlier, the students took out a rally and staged a demonstration before the Assembly.

The federation first took up the issue with the National Human Rights Commission and on its directive the SC and ST Commission was approached. The Commission issued a directive to the Pondicherry administration asking the latter to recommend to the Centre provision of one per cent quota of reservation for the STs. A study was done through the Pondicherry University to identify the groups coming under ST. In spite of all these, nothing had been done to concede the plea of reservation to the STs, Mr. Ramkumar said.
